Munich 1972
Munich (2005). The movie about the Munich Olympics massacre where 11 Israeli athletes were held hostage by the Black September group and later killed when the German authorities attempted to save them. 3 of the killers apprehended were later released back to their Arab countries as heroes due to complicated international policies adopted by the Germans at that time. The Black September group formed and mastermind by Arab Palestinians were successful in get the attention of the world through terrorism in order to get back Jerusalem. In retaliation, Israel formed a assassination squad of 5 to hit the 11 men in charge of Black September. This movie is about the perspective of Avner, a civilian hired by the Mossad and placed in charge of five other commoners with individual specialties (none in murder). The movie places more emphasize on the emotions faced by Avner, how the group started with feelings of enthusiasm of working for their country. Killing each individual on their hit list, most with families and their own ideals, started to change their perspectives.
As new leaders stepped up to take the places of the dead Black September founders, now more cruel and ruthless. The Black September retaliated by more acts of terrorism and started hunting the 5 of them down through the very same source Avner found to track down the 11 leaders. It shows how complex politics in the world of espionage is when you don't even really know who your allies or who you are working for. Facing with the dilemma of 3 deaths out of the 5, and the unending numbers of Black September members, Avner decided to call it quits and return to his wife and child whom he has asked to escape to Brooklyn from Israel for fear of their life. A man with a conscience who started to hunt him, he started to doubt his superiors in the Mossad of merely provoking a crisis that cannot be ended. When questioning his superior about how they intended to end the hydra-like crisis of Black September, his superior merely answered with another question, "Why cut your fingernails when it keeps growing back?"
A very emotionally griping story that puts doubt in a person's mind whether world peace is actually a feasible idea when the diversity of the world population is so unimaginable. Complexity of life increases everyday that no single person can ever encompass in their minds. Even the concept of God seems insignificant by this growing monstrosity. Each day, we try to remind ourselves that we are individuals that are unique. But how often that our thoughts and way of living are dictated not by our own choice. Freedom and peace merely a facade. Man has become a statistic in a world where few govern many. Who are those that are truly free and powerful, who control the rest?
"Mundus Vult Decipi" - The world wants to be deceived.
